The blade is Stainless Steel and silver in color The fittings on the scabbard and handle are solid brass, and the handle is genuine leather-wrapped. The blade is acid-etched (engraved) on both sides.
Personal-use Swords - The second type of sword you can buy is one that is authorized for "personal use". If a Marine does not get issued a sword from the Marine Corps, or for whatever reason wants to buy one for himself outside of normal supply channels, then he is buying one for "personal use". There are at least 2 other manufacturers that I know of that have sold Marine NCO swords certified for personal use. Part of this certification is the requirement of a serial number on the spine of the blade. This way, a Marine that purchases his own sword knows he is getting a sword that is certified for wear as a uniform item.
These personal-use swords are usually not bought by the Marine Corps themselves, and are not standard issue. If you are investigating these swords, you might notice the claim they they have been certified for "personal use". You will probably not find that the Marine Corps bought any directly, they are probably not in the supply system, and probably do not carry a National Stock Number (NSN). This does not mean that other manufacturers do not make high quality swords that you are authorized to wear as part of your uniform. It merely means they are not standard issue.
"Knock-offs" - The third type of sword you will see is commonly referred to as a "knock-off", reproduction, copy, etc. These swords are not standard issue swords, and are not even certified for use as a uniform item. They are normally inferior to the standard issue, or "personal use". swords. Commonly, many of the gold-colored parts are a cheap, anodized metal instead of solid brass or 24 karat gold-plated. Scabbards and handles are usually vinyl-wrapped instead of leather-wrapped, and sometimes the handles themselves are plastic. I've seen some that even sport different colored tassels attached to the handles. Real Marine NCO swords do not have tassels on them!
In short, I sell brand new Marine NCO swords that are the same ones the United States Marine Corps buys. You can't get a more authentic sword than this.
