AS-512 - Apollo 17 - Lunar Surface Journal

Apollo 17 was the sixth and last of the Apollo landings and Mission Commander Eugene A. Cernan often called his flight "the end of the beginning", the end of the first phase of humanity's lunar adventure. The spotlight of history which had shone so brightly during Apollo 11 had long since dimmed and, outside the NASA community, there were few people with the time or inclination pay much attention to what Cernan and his crewmate, geologist Harrison H. Schmitt, did on the Moon. Fortunately, the long-term importance of Apollo 17 was not to be determined by the size of the television audience. After only five brief missions, there was still plenty to be learned about the Moon and about doing useful work in so novel a place.
