AS-504 - Apollo 9 - Saturn V Launch Vehicle Flight Evaluation Report

AS-504 (Apollo 9 mission) was the fourth flight of the Apollo Saturn V flight test program. It was to be the second manned Apollo Saturn V vehicle with the spacecraft including, for the first time, the lunar module (LM). The basic purpose of the flight was to demonstrate the capability of the manned Apollo Command and Service Modules (CSM) in earth orbit, particularly to evaluate LM systems capabilities, LM active rendezvous techniques, and combined CSM/LMfunctions. Additionally, two S-IVB restarts were scheduled to evaluate S-IVB restart capability to simulate lunar mission requirements° The crew consisted of Air Force Col. James A. McDivitt, Air Force Col. David R. Scott, and Russell L. Schweickart.

The space vehicle was composed of the AS-504 launch vehicle consisting of the S-IC, S-11, S-IVB and Instrument Unit (IU) stacked stages and spacecraft consisting of the Spacecraft Lunar Module Adapter (SLA), LM-3, and CSM_I03.

The vehicle was to be launched from Complex 39, Pad A, of.the Kennedy Space Center. The flight azimuth was to be 72 degrees east of north.
